“Corporate Highlight – Thanks Nutrien!”
Being a nonprofit organization, The Vegetable Connection relies on a variety of funding streams in order to make our work in the community possible. This funding comes from a mix of grants, donations from individuals, and corporate giving. For several years, the international yet local company Nutrien has been a very generous donor to The Vegetable Connection. Their support has allowed us to grow and provide local vegetables to many more families. Because we appreciate their contributions, we wanted to share with our community a little more about the work Nutrien does locally and globally. The details to follow can be found in their 2023 Global Sustainability Report, too.
Nutrien has been involved with sustainable agriculture as a solution for feeding the world. They are a “global leader in nutrient stewardship and sustainable agriculture”. They recognize what we’re doing locally with The Vegetable Connection, investing in our programs that support local sustainable farming and equitable access to locally grown food. They are engaged with the United Nations’ Sustainability Goals, including “Zero Hunger through sustainable and productive agriculture”. Nutrien has a commitment to help feed the world “in a way that achieves economic prosperity, supports resilient food systems, improves environmental stewardship and enables positive workplaces”. They recognize that to feed 10 billion people on this planet we’ll have to find new solutions that balance performance with environmental sustainability. Nutrien reached their goal to support “2 million sustainably engaged acres at the end of 2023”, double from 2022, and strives to hit their next target of 75 million acres globally by 2030.
Nutrien also prioritizes protecting water on a global scale. Here in Larimer County, we see the importance of responsible water management to ensure economic and agricultural success. Agriculture utilizes an estimated 70% of freshwater use around the world, making it a critical component of local and global planning as a renewable yet finite resource. In 2022, Nutrien became one of the first companies to achieve WAVE verification for their water stewardship program. This work included “assessing water impacts and risks at 23 manufacturing sites and terminals across North America and South America operations, ensuring best practices were being implemented to improve water stewardship performance in high-risk regions”.
We thank Nutrien for prioritizing important global health issues in their work and for supporting The Vegetable Connection’s goal of feeding our community with local, sustainable agriculture.
