Cooking Dry Beans in the Oven
Beans are a powerhouse of protein and a nutrient-packed vegetable! Their versatility knows no bounds—toss them cold into a crisp salad, simmer them in a hearty soup, or mash them into a flavorful spread. Cook up a batch each week and dive into the endless variety of beans and bold and simple recipes waiting to be explored!
Equipment
- dutch oven or your 'stove to oven' pot
Ingredients
- 2 lbs dry beans water
- 6- 12 tbsp salt
Instructions
Soaking Beans
- Dump dry bean out on the counter and sort, pulling out the broken and bad pieces
- Rinse beans, place into dutch oven
- Add water 1 finger height above the beans
- Salt to taste like the sea
- Soak for 12 -24 hour (add more water if needed)
Cooking Beans
- Rinse out soaked beans
- Add new water, a finger height above the beans, Salt to taste like a mildly salty sea
- Cook first on stove for a 5 minute boil
- Place in the oven at 375 degrees for 1 -2 hours. Taste after one hour to check flavor.
- Pull out of the oven, once the beans are tender to your taste
Notes
This cooking method can be used with any dry beans.
The soaking & cooking with salt allows the beans to stay firm and hold their color.
